Seedling Stages and Transplant Timing
Guidelines for Seedling Care and Optimal Transplant Timing in Hydroponic Systems
Overview
Proper management of seedling stages is crucial for successful transplanting in hydroponic systems. This article outlines the recommended procedures for transplanting seedlings, including timing and best practices.
Standard Operating Procedure
For detailed guidance on transplanting and thinning, refer to SOP Transplanting & Thinning.
Seedling Care
Initial Steps After Planting
- Humidity Domes:
-
- After planting the seeds, instruct the customer to keep the humidity domes on for 5-7 days or until germination begins.
- They should specifically look for the emergence of cotyledons; once these appear, reduced humidity is preferred.
Duration in Seedling Area
- Lettuces and Leafy Greens:
-
- Keep these seedlings in the seedling area for 14 days (2 weeks).
- Herbs:
-
- Allow herbs to remain in the seedling area for 21 days (3 weeks).
Transplanting Instructions
At the end of the designated periods, the seedlings will be ready for transplanting into rafts. Follow these steps:
- Select Strong Seedlings:
- Only transplant the healthiest and strongest seedlings.
- Raft Selection:
- Lettuces and Leafy Greens: Transplant into 36-hole rafts.
- Herbs: Transplant into either 36 or 72-hole rafts, with a preference for 72-hole rafts.
- Transplanting Method:
- Ensure the rockwool plug is level with the raft. If the rockwool sticks out too far, you’ll notice algae begin to build up. This is sometimes inevitable with the herbs and their raft.
Growth Monitoring
After transplanting, monitor the growth of leafy greens and herbs. They should reach maturity and be ready for harvest in 4-6 weeks, depending on the variety.
Conclusion
Following these guidelines will ensure a smooth transition from seedling to transplant stage, promoting healthy growth and maximizing yield in hydroponic systems. For additional support or inquiries, please consult your technical support team.
